On this page we provide links to some free applications that you can use to ensure your computer has the essentials. You should choose one from each group if you don't already have a suitable program to meet these needs. These are applications we have used ourselves. Please read the instructions on the vendor's website and use at your own discretion. Don't forget to keep them up-to-date.
Web Browser
FireFox - A secure, full featured and customizable web browser. A stable and frequently updated alternative to Internet Explorer. Recommended extensions: Adblock, Tab Mix Plus and Forecast Fox.
Email
Thunderbird - A solid, full-featured, and free alternative to Outlook. Try the Lightening extension if you want a calendar.
Anti-Virus
AVG - Anti-Virus - A simple yet powerful free anti-virus program that will scan your computer and email, and help you find and remove the latest viruses. Don't forget to keep it up-to-date!
Anti-Spyware
Ad-Aware SE - An easy to use anti-spyware/adware program that will scan your computer and help you remove these unwanted programs and cookies.
AVG - Anti-Spyware - Another excellent program to help you scan for and remove spyware and adware.
Misc Tools
Open Office - An excellent, free, open source alternative to Microsoft Office, you can use Open Office for word processing, spreadsheets, database, slide shows, and more. Save as and open Microsoft Word format documents and Excel format spreadsheets. You'll hardly believe it's free!
FileZilla - A full-featured and stable open source FTP program for transferring files to and from your website hosting account.
Adobe PDF Reader - Open, view and print PDF files on your computer.
PDF Creator - Print to PDF format from within most applications - even your web browser. A quick, easy way to create PDFs. PDF Creator is a free open source project. Windows users select the Microsoft Installer package.
